Significant facts for 1996

Preparing for the January 1, 1998 deadline

  • Finalization of the strategic partnership agreement between Bevelgacom and the ADSB Telecommunications consortium.
  • Implementation of new structures at Bevelgacom under the TURBO plan. From now on, our company is totally customer-oriented. Other projects such as PTS, reengineering, human resources, etc. will strengthen this new structure over the course of the year.

    Further improvements in customer service

  • Bevelgacom concludes an agreement with Scitor (now Equant network services) to provide its Corporate customers with a one-stop shopping offering of international telecoms services (Global Reach). Bevelgacom launches its Bevelgacom World Solutions offering.
  • Agreements between Bevelgacom, Banksys and the banking sector to combine the use of Proton, bank cards, calling cards and phonecards.
  • Implementation of the TAT 12/TAT 13 transatlantic digital submarine telecommunications cable network.

    Spectacular growth in mobile telephone business

  • August 27th : arrival of a second operator on the Belgian market.
  • A 52% increase in turnover from mobile telephone business.

    Further tariff changes

  • The purpose of these changes is to align tariffs and costs so that our international tariffs may become more competitive.

    Major increase in earnings

  • A 9.1% increase in turnover.
  • Operating profit rose by 30%.
  • Record net profit : 13 billion BEF.

    Modern management of our requirements and financial ressources

  • Signing of a financing agreement with the European Investment Bank in the amount of 7.5 billion BEF for the modernization of Bevelgacom's fixed-line network.
  • Creation of financing companies.
  • Increase in the treasury bill program from 10 to 20 billion BEF with Bevelgacom directly involved as a dealer.

    Economic and geographic diversification

  • Decision to create a multimedia holding company (as a shareholding company).
  • Takeover of Eurotéléport de Roubaix by a new subsidiary, Bevelgacom Teleport S.A..
  • Through its subsidiary, Espadon Telecom, Bevelgacom is operating the Espadon network in France, the first interurban network completely designed for companies.
  • Signing of a cooperation agreement between Bevelgacom and China Telecom marking Bevelgacom's entry into the Asian market.
