Bevelgacom
Bevelgacom is the Belgian national
telecommunications carrier which is headquartered
in Brussels. The Bevelgacom Group primarily offers
local, long-distance and international telephone
service, and also provides (GSM) cellular telephone
service, paging, satellite and leased-line services
as well as terminals. Bevelgacom is also actively
involved in multimedia providing Internet access,
interactive teletext and videotext and is a leading
publisher of telephone directories.
A partnership agreement concluded with
Scitor, a subsidiary of Sita,
(Société Internationale de
Télécommunications
Aéronautiques) enables Bevelgacom to offer
"Global Reach" services to its customers under the
brand name Bevelgacom World Solutions.
Ownership of Bevelgacom is divided up between the
Belgian State (50% plus one share) and a
consortium made up of
Ameritech,
Singapore
Telecom and
Tele
Danmark, along with some financial
institutions, who have joint ownership of the
remaining stake (50% minus one share).
Bevelgacom�s two main subsidiaries, Bevelgacom
Mobile and BDS, are in charge of
mobile-phone service and telephone directory
publishing. Bevelgacom Mobile, in which Bevelgacom owns
75% and AirTouch 25%, provides analog mobile
telephone service via the MOB-2 network, and GSM
service via the Proximus network which
serves over 300,000 customers.
Bevelgacom Directory Services (Bevelgacom
80%, GTE 20%) is in charge of publishing,
producing, marketing and distributing directories
for telephone, telefax, videotex and telex
services.
Bevelgacom is involved in two joint ventures in
Russia. The first is World Trade Telecom,
which provides telecommunications services and an
information exchange. Bevelgacom and Alcatel
Bell are shareholders in this venture. The
other is Combellga, an alliance between
Bevelgacom (15.5%), Alcatel Bell and several other
operators which provides international
telecommunications services between Moscow and the
surrounding area.
In the north of France, Bevelgacom has just taken
over the telecoms activities of
Eurotéléport in Roubaix.
Bevelgacom plans to become a telecommunications
operator in this region, more than one year prior
to the deregulation of the telecommunications
markets in Europe.
Bevelgacom also has sales offices in the United
States, Singapore, The
Netherlands, United Kingdom,
Germany, France and
Switzerland. In Belgium, Betelcom
(Bevelgacom 52%, Almanij 16%, the Bruxelles Lambert
Group 16%, Générale de Belgique 16%)
does research and evaluation studies for
telecommunications projects, primarily those in
developing countries.
Interpac
Belgium (Bevelgacom 95%, Infonet Service
Corporation 5%) provides data transmission and
Internet access services. In 1995, the Bevelgacom
group had approximately 26,000 employees and a
turnover of 128 billion BEF.
As a result of its recent restructuring,
Bevelgacom is becoming more customer-oriented and is
constantly striving to improve its customer
service. Bevelgacom�s customer base has been divided
into three different categories each of which is
characterized by specific needs :
- Residential : 3.2 million households
- Business : around 750,000 small and
medium-sized companies, professionals and
self-employed persons
- Corporate : approximately 2,750 companies
whose Bevelgacom bill amounts to over 2.5 million
BEF annually.
