National
telephone service
This area covers all domestic calls
which transit the fixed line telephone
network, subscription fees and connections
charges to this network as well as
interconnection traffic. This heading also
covers ISDN traffic, subscription fees and
connection charges.
The increase in turnover is primarily a
result of the increase in the number of
connections, considerable growth in ISDN
(more than two times the receipts for the
previous year over the same period) and
rate adjustments in 1995 involving
domestic calls as well as telephone
subscription fees.
National telephone traffic also
continues to take advantage of the general
increase in telephone traffic due to the
growth in GSM (traffic from the fixed line
network to the mobile phone network and
interconnections).
International
telephone service
This heading covers international calls
made via the fixed line network, ISDN and
VPN (Virtual Private Network).
The decrease in international tariffs,
increased competition and volume rebate
programs for corporate customers (Volume
Purchase Agreements) have slightly lowered
receipts from the fixed line network.
Income generated by VPN has a
relatively small impact on this heading
still. Furthermore, revenue from
international leased lines and
international traffic generated by mobile
phones has not been included under this
heading. It nevertheless also contributes
to the increase in revenue on the
international level.
Mobile
communications services
Mobile communications services
primarily cover income generated from the
sale of terminals and by mobile telephone
traffic (business from the Bevelgacom Mobile
subsidiary) as well as income from public
telephones, paging equipment and the
AXIS® calling card.
At the end of June 1996, this area
represented 13% of the total turnover for
the group compared to 10% at the end of
1995.
The continued spectacular growth in
turnover for mobile phones (+ 53% compared
to the first half of 1995) primarily
reflects the huge success of the GSM
service (267,000 customers at the end of
June 1996 compared to 189,000 at the end
of 1995).
Bevelgacom Mobile has consistently
improved the quality and coverage of its
network. It has also launched several new
services and expanded its tariff grid to
meet the specific needs of each market
segment.
Income from public telephones has been
relatively stable.
Paging equipment has maintained its
high growth rate: + 17% in receipts
compared to the first half of 1995.
In its development stage, AXIS® has
more than doubled its turnover compared
with the same period in 1995.
Terminals
This primarily covers the rental,
maintenance and sale of basic terminals
and complex installations (PABX
switchboards).
Bevelgacom is maintaining its position as
the leader in this deregulated market but
is still feeling the effects of decreasing
prices. Income from ISDN terminals is
rising sharply since demand for these
products is experiencing considerable
growth.
Other
activities
These primarily include leased lines,
data transmission (telex, DCS, etc.),
videotext, value-added services
(COMFORT®, Infokiosque, toll-free
numbers and shared billing, etc.) and
directory business.
The decrease in turnover for this
heading is primarily due to the drop in
revenue from the directory business
arising from the decrease in the price
which Bevelgacom charged telephone directory
publishers for the details of telephone
customers.
