JANUARY 31, 1997 Bevelgacom lowers international tariffs Starting April 7, 1997 Bevelgacom is lowering its international tariffs for calls to Andorra, Denmark, Germany, the Faeroe Islands, France, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom by 10 %. From that date, the normal tariff will be 18.15 BEF/minute (currently 20.17 BEF/minute) and the reduced tariff will be 16.50 BEF/minute (currently 18.15 BEF/minute). The reduced tariff will be in effect all day Sunday and on other days between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. In anticipation of this, starting February 1, 1997, Bevelgacom is lowering its rates for international calls to 122 countries outside Europe by 8% to 33 % depending on the destination. For instance, a call to Singapore will cost 60.5 BEF per minute (instead of 66 BEF), to Brazil, it will cost 84 BEF per minute (intead of 98 BEF) and to North Korea, it will be 66 BEF per minute (instead of 98 BEF). The full details of the tariff changes can be found in the annex. All rates mentioned are inclusive of VAT. The customer will benefit from these tariff decreases and, ultimately so will the entire economy of Belgium as well as the country's competitive position. Lower international tariffs in fact result in lower costs for business which, in Belgium, as an exporting country, is primarily geared towards foreign markets. Likewise it is important for residential customers - whether they be tourists or not - to be able to make international calls at attractive tariffs. The total decrease in revenue for Bevelgacom until the end of 1997 as a result of these two tariff changes has been estimated at 1,04 billion BEF, which, in fact, represents the amount which customers will pay less. In 1996 Bevelgacom already lowered its rates to Canada, Hawaii, the Scandinavian countries and the United States by 12.5 % to 16.7 %. Tariffs for international digital leased lines were lowered by 40 % whereas Proximus tariffs were lowered by more than 30 %. Likewise prices for most terminal equipment were lowered. Internet access costs dropped by 40 %. Finally, since October 1996, Bevelgacom has been offering members of the Bevelgacom Club (who pay an annual membership fee of 500 BEF) a 10 % discount on all international calls.
