Construction and Maintenance Agreement of the submarine fiber-optic cable project
On Thursday January 15th, 1997, Bevelgacom, together with 90 other telecom operators, will sign in Singapore the Construction and Maintenance Agreement of the submarine fiber-optic cable project SEA-ME-WE 3.
That cable system, stretching from Europe to the Pacific Region, is composed of 2 fiber pairs with a capacity of 4 times 2.5 Gbit/s per pair, upgradable to a total maximum capacity of 40 Gbit/s.
As Belgium, along with roughly 30 other countries will have its own landing point, planned for Oostende, the realization of that project will procure for Bevelgacom a direct wet connection to the enormous potential growth telecom market in Southeast Asia, Japan and China. That direct wet connection, completing Bevelgacom's already existing transatlantic fiber optic network, will allow Bevelgacom to develop in close cooperation with its strategic partners a world-wide international strategy, with itself acting as a European"Hub" and Singapore Telecom as an Asian "Hub".
That cable system is expected to be operational by December 1998, with the exception of the Far East Extension (East of Singapore and Malaysia) which is scheduled to go into operation in March 1999.
This project represents an investment of about 1 billion BEF for Bevelgacom.
