Cooperation
agreements between Bevelgacom and China
Telecom
During a mission to China which was
led by Prince Philippe, President of the Belgian
Foreign Trade Office and Philippe Maystadt, Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Bevelgacom,
represented by its CEO John Goossens, and its
partner Singapore
Telecom have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Chinese Minister for Posts
and Telecommunications and China Telecom, the
national telecommunications operator in China.
This is not the first time that Singapore
Telecom has signed a cooperation agreement with
China. Singapore Telecom, one of Bevelgacom's
strategic partners, has already financed the
installation of the first pager network in China
and is also setting up the first GSM network there.
For Bevelgacom, on the other hand, this will be the
company's first endeavor in the Asian market.
In general, this framework MOU will enable
existing ties already linking China and Belgium to
be further strengthened. It will involve setting up
a cooperation between the two national telecoms
operators, Bevelgacom and China Telecom, who are
jointly concerned about better serving the
communications needs of their respective customers.
Both companies also want to explore certain
opportunities for cooperation in various areas such
as marketing, technology as well as exchange
experience and information in the area of
management and operations.
Over time, this Memorandum of Understanding
could also give rise to more specific projects
which have yet to be identified. However,
cooperation involving rerouting, via an underwater
fiber-optic cable, of a portion of the
international traffic from China to Belgium as well
as Brussels being designated as an international
hub for China can already be announced.
Bevelgacom also intends to obtain a roaming
agreement which would allow its GSM customers to be
recognized by the mobile-phone network in China and
conversely, for China Telecom customers to be
recognized by the Belgian mobile-phone network.
Roaming agreements have already been concluded
by Bevelgacom with over 66 operators in 42 countries
around the world.
