The Belgian ATM platform At this site you will find information on the goals of the Platform, on its activities and on the member organisations. What is the Belgian ATM platform? The Belgian ATM platform was founded in March 1994, to co-ordinate and stimulate the introduction of broadband services and applications in Belgium. Initiators of the platform were Bevelgacom, the telecommunication and computer industry and telecom user groups. Their intention was to attract potential users of ATM to the possibilities of ATM and to stimulate the introduction and use of ATM applications. It is an open platform, every interested company or institution can become a member. The platform operates by setting up specialized working groups, which can initiate a concrete application. These applications are then developed by actual users together with the working group members. Any member of the platform can launch a working group on a subject. Applications of the ATM broadband network can be sought in the residential and business worlds, and in public institutions : In the graphics and textile sectors, large quantities of data can be transferred rapidly, to drastically reduce the time between design and production of e.g. a newspaper or a textile pattern. In the health sector, images can be viewed from a distance with incredible precision. For radio and TV, the broadband network offers new prospects for exchanging programs as well as for broadcasting to co-transmitters. The combination of the broadband network with computer animation, sound and text opens up enormous prospects for multimedia education and multimedia libraries. Residential services such as video on demand, teleshopping, televoting, interactive games will become reality within the next ten years.
